There are some hotels in Barcelona that embody aspects of the city’s rich culture and its artistic heritage in unique ways. From top boutique and gallery spaces to more affordable but concept-driven spaces, here’s Unravelog’s list of 8 artsy hotels.

 Hotel Raco del Pi

This hotel is located in the city’s historic centre of the Gothic Quarter, and in a 19th-century structure now considered a part of Barcelona’s heritage buildings. Its location on one of its quieter streets makes it ideal for exploring the medieval stalwarts of the locality like the Las Ramblas and Plaça Catalunya.

One is greeted at the hotel with a glass of Cava in the inner courtyard. The building has been suitably modernised with a glass-walled atrium and cooling parquet floors in each room. The price for a double room starts from 159€ per night, without breakfast.

El Palace, Barcelona

Dazzling old-world opulence is what most defines El Palace, one of Barcelona’s earliest luxury hotels. The setting is reminiscent of a grand palace with marble flooring, crystal chandeliers, double staircases, red and gilt edges and the works. Established originally by the Ritz hotel group in 1919, the space has hosted famous names like Salvador Dalí, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and Paul McCartney. Their ‘Art Suites’, among six of their best, are dedicated to Salvador Dali (painting), Joan Miró (sculpture), César Ritz (architecture), Carlos Ruiz Zafón (literature), Ronnie Wood (music), and Josephine Baker (dance).

Hotel Arts, Barcelona

No list of Barcelona’s leading hotels would be complete without a feature on Hotel Arts. One of the city’s original luxury hotels built for the 1992 Olympic games, it stands tall as a 44-floor blue-glass and steel building with views across the Mediterranean sea. The 5-star space has two Michelin – star restaurants, a rooftop spa, two outdoor pools overlooking the sea, lush gardens, and an exclusive Spanish contemporary art collection. There is a range of rooms available to suit various budgets starting from double rooms for €395 in the low season, and from €605 in the high season.

Hotel Market

This has come to be known as one of the best ‘budget boutique’ hotels with a modern and youthful feel. It is located right next to the San Antoni market which has acquired quite the hipster vibe. The name is derived from the renovated 19th-century market building it is housed in, which also has various other cafes, and bars.

The décor is pretty original with a period theme in the common areas, bar and restaurant contrasting with the minimalist and funky rooms – dark teak wood frames, wooden floorboards, Chairman Mao portraits and hints of red. The price for double rooms starts from €59  in the low season, and from €180 otherwise.

Room Mate Anna

The Room-Mate is a Barcelona hotel group with growing popularity for its hip decor at affordable prices. Each space is designed after a fictional character and Anna is one of the most sought after. It can be explained as bold and inventive, with some Oriental inspiration. It includes fish-motif wallpapers, loud colours (like red-lacquered headboards and furniture), geometric patterned floors, abstract art prints, all devised by Spanish interior designer Lorenzo Castillo. The restaurant offers only breakfast service and the staff are helpful. Double room prices start from €99  in the low season and can rise up to €249.

Hotel Astoria

This is a classic 3-star boutique hotel located right next to Barcelona’s most posh shopping areas of Avenida Diagonal and Paseo de Gracia. Its highlight though is the exclusive gallery space featuring more than 300 works by Richard Opisso – illustrator, cartoonist and painter and forerunner of Catalan art in the 20th century.

Renowned modernist and Art Nouveau works are displayed in their restaurant too. The curated poster collection found across the hotel represents festivals and significant events in Barcelona, like the Universal Exhibition of 1929.

Besides this, it offers 117 rooms, a terrace with an outdoor gym and a swimming pool. The starting price for a double room ranges from €70 to 192.

Pratik Ramblas

The Pratik group is part of a set of five hotels in Barcelona, each with its unique theme. Pratik Rambla is palatial Spanish at its best – it’s set inside the 19th-century Casa Climent Arola, designed by Modernist architect Francesc de P. Villar. It has retained Casa’s original high ceilings, mosaic floors, and other features.

The rooms are modern and cosy with striking artwork and angular furniture, oversized beds, and bathrooms with rain showers. There is a sunlit reading room with bay windows and an interior courtyard with ample space to lounge.

Besides all this, it is located on Rambla Catalunya – one of the city’s most green and elegant boulevards that has many cafés, small museums, and boutiques. The smaller rooms of the hotel may be a bit too compact in size. The prices start from 76 for a double room.

The Suites Avenue effortlessly blends art, modernity and comfort with 41 self-contained apartments, two outdoor swimming pools, a sauna, a solarium, and a museum room with Hindu and Buddhist artworks.

Casa Batlló is a 5-minute walk from the apartments, while Plaza de Catalunya and Las Ramblas are just over a kilometre away. Their prices start from 158 for a self-contained apartment.
